Highway 101: Summerland began construction in November.

Since COVID-19 public gathering restrictions limited our ability to host a kick-off event in person, we created a kick-off video. Please click on the image below to see a short video that showcases key improvements that will be built in the Summerland segment.

Timeframe:  November 15 - December 5, 2020

* Crews will not work on Thursday and Friday, November 26 and 27, in observance of Thanksgiving.

*Please remember to Slow for the Cone Zone and use care throughout the construction zone. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph for safety throughout the construction areas.*

    • Off-ramp at Sheffield Dr, closed for up to 16 months

      • Intermittent nighttime closures through Nov. 17

      • (closed Nov. 18) During the closure of the southbound Highway 101 off-ramp at Sheffield Drive, flaggers will direct traffic at the San Ysidro Road and North Jameson Lane intersection during morning peak periods, 7:30 am - 9:00 am, Monday through Friday. New stop signs will be installed to create a 4-way, stop-controlled intersection at the southbound Highway 101 off-ramp and San Ysidro Road. Flaggers will assist in this area as needed. The combination of new stop signs and flaggers will enable a better flow of traffic during the detour that uses the southbound Highway 101 off-ramp at San Ysidro Road.

    • On- & off-ramps at Reynolds Ave, closed up to 16 weeks, use off-ramp at Linden Ave and on-ramp at Casitas Pass Rd

  • Evans Ave Undercrossing

    • Flaggers will direct traffic with alternating lane closures as needed during daytime work for the installation of temporary safety barriers, materials delivery, and equipment movement. The majority of work will occur behind safety barriers with lanes open on Evans Avenue under the freeway bridges.

*Please note that consecutive ramps in the same direction will not be closed at the same time with the exception of the southbound on-ramps at Sheffield Dr and Wallace Ave.

Highway 101:  Summerland
The Summerland segment is located between Sheffield Drive and North Padaro Lane.

  • Highway 101

    • Crews will fence environmentally-sensitive areas, remove trees and vegetation, remove old cormorant nests and trim tree limbs, and install temporary safety barriers. Work continues to strengthen freeway shoulders. Once the shoulder areas are strengthened, vehicular lanes will shift to the shoulders and construction will begin in the median and fast lane areas.

    • Once lanes are shifted, crews will begin excavating old pavement. Please expect truck trips and noise during debris removal during nighttime working hours.

  • Sheffield Drive Interchange

    • Crews will begin removing old pavement and excavating near the bridge. Then crews will install shoring piles to support the construction zone. Once installed, crews will begin installing underground supports (piles) for portions of the new bridges in the median. Please expect daytime noise during pile driving for underground supports.

    • Crews will also begin work on the side support (abutment) for the new southbound bridge.

  • Evans Avenue Undercrossing

    • Vehicular lanes will be restriped to create a construction area and temporary safety barriers will be installed.

    • Crews will begin excavating and installing underground supports (piles) between the Highway 101 bridges for the new upcoming bridge.

  • N. Padaro Interchange

    • Concrete recycling continues.

    • Crews will continue excavating old roadway areas and begin paving the underlayer for the new southbound lanes.

    • Overhead signs:  work continues on foundations and posts for new signs.
