Highway 101: Summerland began construction in November.

Since COVID-19 public gathering restrictions limited our ability to host a kick-off event in person, we created a kick-off video. Please click on the image below to see a short video that showcases key improvements that will be built in the Summerland segment.

Closures (weather permitting)
*Please remember to Slow for the Cone Zone and use care throughout the construction zone. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph for safety throughout the construction areas.*

  • Northbound Highway 101

    • Sunday nights, 9:00 pm – 5:00 am, 1 lane:  Linden Ave to Sheffield Dr

    • Monday – Thursday nights, 8:00 pm – 5:00 am, 1 lane: Linden Ave to Sheffield Dr

  • Southbound Highway 101

    • Sunday nights, 10:00 pm – 7:00 am, 1 lane: Sheffield Dr to Linden Ave 

    • Monday – Thursday nights, 8:00 pm – 7:30 am, 1 lane:  Sheffield Dr to Linden Ave

    • Monday - Thursday days, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, off-ramp at Casitas Pass Rd (closed as needed for pavement grinding)

    • On-ramp at Sheffield Dr, closed for the duration of the project, anticipated reopening 2023, drivers can use the southbound on-ramps at Wallace Ave and N Padaro Ln

    • Off-ramp at Sheffield Dr, closed for up to 16 months, anticipated reopening end of 2021, drivers can use the southbound off-ramp at San Ysidro Rd

    • On- & off-ramps at Reynolds Ave, closed up to 16 weeks, anticipated reopening Jan. 25 (weather dependent), drivers can use off-ramp at Linden Ave and on-ramp at Casitas Pass Rd while the ramp is closed

      • Jan. 25 - please expect flaggers directing traffic at the Reynolds and Carpinteria Ave intersection 

    • Upcoming Closures

      • off-ramp at Carpinteria Ave, closed up to 7 weeks, beginning as early as Feb. 1 

      • off-ramp at Linden Ave, closed up to 5 weeks, beginning as early as Feb. 8

  • Evans Ave Undercrossing

    • Flaggers will direct traffic with alternating lane closures as needed during daytime work for materials delivery and equipment movement. The majority of work will occur behind safety barriers with lanes open on Evans Avenue under the freeway bridges.

  • Sheffield Dr & N Jameson Ln 

    • Temporary stop signs will be installed at the intersection of Sheffield Dr and N Jameson Ln for the duration of construction of the Summerland segment

  • Via Real 

    • Flaggers will direct traffic as needed during the day near Arroyo Parida bridge to enable crews to install bird nesting deterrents.

Highway 101:  Summerland
The Summerland segment is located between Sheffield Drive and North Padaro Lane. 

  • Highway 101

    • Crews will install underground storm drains and visual deterrents to encourage nesting outside of the construction area. 

    • Crews will remove old safety barriers from the median and then excavate old pavement and soil.

  • Sheffield Drive Interchange

    • Crews will continue to build footings, install rebar, and pour concrete for columns, side supports (abutments), and retaining walls for the new bridges in the median. 

  • Evans Avenue Undercrossing

    • Crews will continue excavating and installing underground supports (piles) between the Highway 101 bridges for the new upcoming bridge (see photo below). Please expect daytime noise when crews drive piles for the bridge supports.


  • N. Padaro Interchange

    • Concrete recycling continues.

Highway 101:  Padaro
The Padaro segment is located between North Padaro and South Padaro/Santa Claus Lanes. This project will add a new third freeway lane in each direction and new bridges over Toro and Arroyo Parida Creeks. At the South Padaro Lane Undercrossing, the bridge and on- and off-ramps will be replaced. At the North Padaro Lane Interchange, new on- and off-ramp improvements will be built. There will also be three new sound walls built.

Over the next few weeks, to comply with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife requirements related to bird nesting, crews will undertake pre-construction work to clear trees and vegetation so that construction can begin this summer. The majority of work will occur in the median and near the South Padaro/Santa Claus Lane on- and off-ramps.


  • Memorial Oaks - upcoming improvements (after roadway construction)

    • On Highway 101 between Santa Claus Lane and North Padaro, 108 new oak trees will be planted and the center median will feature the Blue Star Symbol and oak leaves as an update to the Memorial Oaks section commemorating World War I service.

Highway 101:  Carpinteria

  • Highway 101 & Ramps

    • Southbound Hwy 101 & Reynolds Ave Ramps:  Crews will finish up curb and gutter installation for the new lanes and ramps near Reynolds Ave. Crews will also work on intersection and crosswalk improvements at Carpinteria and Reynolds Avenues. Ramps will reopen on Jan. 25 depending on weather.

    • Casitas Pass southbound off-ramp: Crews will smooth grind the pavement. Work is expected to take 1 day but is dependent on weather.

    • Overhead signs:  Work continues on foundations and posts for new signs.

    • Northbound Hwy 101:  Crews will clear vegetation for the next stage of work.

  • Franklin & Santa Monica Creek Bridges

    • Crews will continue work on the approach areas and safety barriers.

  • Sound walls

    • Southbound Hwy 101 between Carpinteria & Santa Ynez Avenues

      • Crews will excavate and install underground supports for new wall sections. Work will then progress to building the wall footings and rebar installation.


  • Bailard Avenue & Via Real

    • Crews will pave the southbound areas between the freeway lanes and ramps (gore areas) near Bailard Avenue.

    • On Via Real near the mobile home parks, crews will repave roadway areas and remove an existing bump on Via Real. Flaggers will direct traffic as needed.

Highway 101:  Linden and Casitas Pass

  • Landscaping

    • The landscaping contractor is working on new irrigation lines and is planting along southbound Highway 101 between Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass Road.

Highway 101: Carpinteria to Santa Barbara is a project undertaken by Caltrans and SBCAG in cooperation with local agencies to add a new carpool lane in each direction between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. The project will improve bridges, interchanges, on- and off-ramps, and add sound walls.
